Father Pierce will always remain in my mind as the Sean Connery look-alike that married Chris and I.

On Sunday, Chris and I took Bunk out for a drive to get ice cream. He smelled the ice cream and immediately started acting like a big dork.

While driving home on one of the busiest streets in Fort Collins, Bunk stuck his head out the window for probably the second time ever. Before we could even tell him “no,” he had both feet out and fell/jumped out the backseat window. We were going about 20 to 30 mph. I looked back just in time to see a dog butt falling outside the moving 4Runner. There was a horrible puppy howl as he hit the ground, and Chris stopped in the middle of traffic. Bunk fell outside Chris’ side of the car, and thankfully it was on the side with the median and not into traffic. I didn’t see it, but Chris said that he could see Bunk rolling alongside the car.

Amazingly, Bunk walked away without being run over or breaking anything (confirmed by the emergency vet). He only has a few scrapes and was barely even sore the next day. It was a close call, but I’m beginning to think this dog is indestructible.

From Bunk

Friday was the first water retrieve (of a stick) with an above-his-head dive into the pond near our house.

From Bunk

Bunk also had his first (and second the following day) taste of ice cream. He loved it, but we may have created a monster. Bunk still not completely calmed down.

From Bunk

Bunk is also doing his best to grow into his paws. Fast. He now weighs 45 pounds at just 12.5 weeks old. Bunk learned how to climb stairs last weekend and is independent enough to wander up there and go exploring. Close your closets and hide your shoes!

Hope everyone is getting ready for a great 4th of July!

The short answer is that we were watching a lot of The Wire, a HBO TV-series, while we were gearing up to get him. In the show, Bunk is the name of the loyal best friend character — which is exactly what we hoped to find in our dog.

And, I think we found him.

On Tuesday, Chris gave him the first serious crate lesson (my version of this lesson was listening to the howling for about 15 minutes before giving in). Chris’ training worked much better. He now happily goes into his crate to take naps throughout the day and is quiet the whole time.

We even left him in the crate for 7 hours (with a visit from a pet sitter to let him out halfway through) while I had a meeting away from the home office today. No accidents and not even a whine when I walked in the door. Smart puppy!

Bunk also had his first veterinarian visit and everything is perfect. The vet does think that he’ll be between 80 and 90 lbs. as an adult. This is what I repeat to myself when I’m trying to be patient with the puppy chewing (example: I just rescued my cell phone from his mouth about 30 minutes ago). Puppy chewing means that he’s actually still a puppy with all its cuteness. Plus, I’m bigger than him, can pick him up and can still outrun him.

Click on the picture for more Bunk!

After a long time without a dog, Chris and I have adopted Bunk – quite possibly the world’s fattest and cutest Labrador Retriever puppy. He is super smart, a little whiny, snores, and he cannot help but pick things up with his mouth and bring them to you. Perfect!

Finding Bunk took more than seven months of searching and 2,200 miles of driving, and he was right in our backyard the whole time.

Searching

Since we moved to Colorado in January, we have been searching for the perfect puppy. He would have to be a Labrador Retriever, a good hunting dog, and a good companion.

Chris and I thought we finally found a good breeder. He had excellent recommendations and touted his dogs as having all the characteristics we wanted. The only catch was that he is located just outside Minneapolis.

The Wrong One
It’s a testament to how badly Chris and I wanted a good dog that we willingly took off work on Friday and started driving, and we kept driving even as my car’s air conditioning started to give out around Des Moines in temperatures above 90 degrees.

Upon arriving at the breeder Saturday, we noticed about 10 skinny, ugly dogs running around in the yard. We hoped that wasn’t an example of the breeder’s genetic foundation (it was). We got a little more nervous when the breeder greeted us with the sire, which was a 70-pound dog with a rough haircoat and every rib showing. The puppy’s mother was 55 pounds and didn’t look any better.

The breeder’s home and his kennel were one in the same. His basement was filled with about eight or 10 dog plastic dog crates stacked two high, and there were at least five other crates scattered throughout the living areas. The breeder’s porch smelled exactly like a barn and contained at least eight more plastic crates stacked two high with “started” dogs. The litter of puppies were thin, very small for their age and looked more like rats than Labradors.*

Chris and I knew these weren’t the dogs for us. After 15 hours of driving (one-way trip time from Fort Collins to Minneapolis) and months of excitement, this was a huge disappointment.

The Luck
We started calling the “dog people” in our lives on the way back – calling alternate breeders anywhere in the Midwest we might be able to visit. Bill (Chris’ Dad) called a reputable trainer in Iowa — Contender Retrievers — who said most of their stock is bred in Pratt, Kan. For those of you that don’t know, Pratt is 15 minutes away from the Roenfarm.

Bill dropped all the grandchildren excitement and farm duties to go check out the pups for us that very morning. Chris and I had been just a few miles away from our future puppy no less than twice in the last month alone. We just had to drive all the way to Minnesota to get there first.

Today, we woke up on our seventh anniversary to Bunk. Happy anniversary to us!

The last time we had a dog this age was 1999, and we owned nothing of value that couldn’t be chewed on by a puppy. This time around, it’s a little different. Bunk has a lot of spunk (his parents are Grindstone Molly and Lean Angus – both old, ornery and healthy dogs with great pedigrees). I’m sure that I’m biased, but I think Bunk already loves us – and we’re so happy to have him.

* Full disclosure: Chris and I like our Labs on the fat side. Our last dog answered to the name “Fatty Fatty Fat-Fat.”

Thanks to everyone who came such a long way to attend.

More (and hopefully better) pictures will follow, but here is an example that I took with my iPhone. Frankly, I stopped taking phone pics because I was in such a backlit spot. The rest of the time I was running Bill’s much nicer Nikon.

However, this did give me the opportunity to try out the new Photoshop mobile app I downloaded. It’s BY FAR the nicest photo app for the iPhone that I’ve found. Easy controls and many different functions in one, free app.

This is what I took with the iPhone without alteration and then after playing with PS Mobile for about three minutes. Mas fina!

I’ll upload more pics as I receive the good stuff.

Mostly we wanted to enjoy the spring weather and sample the eggs benedict. Sadly, no pictures of the eggs made it because they went too fast.

Of course, we were in Boulder and at the Farmer’s Market so there were hippies everwhere. The family begged me not to badger the “steroid free” bison guy so I just took this picture instead.

These are my new ski boots – Tecnica Dragons. I was a little disapointed to learn that they put me in the “intermediate skier” version, but I am not looking to seriously injure myself. Chris got new Dalbello boots, but I can’t find the right version for a picture. (Hint: they look like ski boots.)

We also had to get hiking boots for me — untested due to the foot of new snow we got this weekend. And, a roof rack for the skis. Skis are yet unpurchased while we try out rentals.

This weekend, we headed out to Breckenridge to test the new boots. Chris again took me down a trail with moguls. I kinda looked like this:

New boots made for a much more enjoyable ski trip. Other highlights of the weekend include:

  • Taking four hours to get to Breckenridge and four hours to get back due to the traffic (everyone else had the same idea we did).
  • Having an awesome dinner at Katie and Micah’s apartment on the way home.
  • Katie and I kicking Chris and Micah’s butt at Trivial Pursuit (great birthday gift!).
  • Closing the garage door on the car after we got home (no major harm done).
