CHICAGO | The Kansas City Chiefs are 0-2 for the second straight season following a miserable offensive performance in Sunday’s 20-10 loss against Chicago at Soldier Field.
The Bears opened the scoring early in the second quarter on Rex Grossman’s 2-yard touchdown pass to 315-pound offensive lineman John St. Clair, who had checked in as an eligible receiver.
The Chiefs went three-and-out on their ensuing possession, and Chicago capitalized when Devin Hester returned Dustin Colquitt’s punt 73 yards for a touchdown.
The Bears’ two touchdowns took just 68 seconds off the game clock.
At that point it looked as if rallying would be a cumbersome task for the Chiefs, who went three-and-out on four of their first five offensive possessions.
A Robbie Gould field goal extended Chicago’s cushion to 17-0 with 2:25 left before intermission before the Chiefs cut into the lead on Damon Huard’s 16-yard scoring pass on their next possession.
Kansas City trailed 17-7 at halftime.
Gould made it 20-7 on a 38-yard field goal midway through the third. The Chiefs responded with Dave Rayner’s 45-yard field goal that made it 20-10.
Poorly as their offense played, the Chiefs still had opportunities to win the game in the final stanza.
Linebacker Napoleon Harris picked off a pass that led to a 48-yard field-goal attempt by Rayner, but the kick was blocked. Linebacker Donnie Edwards came up with an interception moments later, and the Chiefs eventually ended facing third and 1 on Chicago’s 16.
Rather than give the ball to running back Larry Johnson, Chiefs quarterback Damon Huard heaved a fade pass to receiver Samie Parker — one of the smallest players on the team — in the corner of the end zone.
Danieal Manning intercepted the pass, ending any hopes of a Chiefs comeback.
Kansas City returns to action next week with its home opener against Minnesota. Kickoff is at noon at Arrowhead Stadium.
