Destroying Wealth
INVESTOR’S BUSINESS DAILY Posted 8/28/2007
Washington: Rep. John Dingell plans to introduce a bill that would strip away the mortgage deduction for taxpayers who live in homes larger than 3,000 square feet. Does he want a step-off-the-cliff recession?
The Michigan Democrat’s grand goal is to discourage energy use — and it smacks of a political favor. This is the man who refuses to allow his party to increase fuel mileage standards in the auto industry that he represents, so he clearly feels that he must give his colleagues something. In reporting Dingell’s bungle, Canada’s Financial Post wrote that he “is stirring up a hornet’s nest” because of the mortgage interest deduction’s popularity. But thanks to a growing streak of hostility toward large homes — maligned as “McMansions” — fostered through resentment created by environmentalists and class warriors, his ill-advised legislation, part of a larger carbon tax bill, actually has a chance to pass the House.

Other people having fun
Well, as we’ve obviously been living large lately, I thought showing off some of our friends’ fun and exciting lives would be appropriate. Here are some interesting things that our friends have been up to:

The Rangers scored 30 (yes, 30) runs Wednesday night in Baltimore, amassing the most runs in a MLB game since 1897. Marlon Byrd and Travis Metcalf hit grand slams for Texas, while Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Ramon Vazquez each homered twice and had seven RBIs.

Sam just can’t get a break, or a vacation
Excerpt from The New York Times comparing candidates’ summer vacations. Apparently, Sam needs a respite.
How I Didn’t Spend My Summer Vacation
AND the winner is … Sam Brownback.
The senator from Kansas, a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, is running near the bottom in polls.
But by one standard Mr. Brownback has trounced his rivals: He is taking a five-day August vacation.
That’s right, the candidate plans to do no campaigning, no fund-raising, no meeting with staff and no interviews for five-sevenths of a week, while he and his wife retreat to a family home in the Colorado Rockies.
“Sam really likes to hike, take picnics, look at the animals,” said his wife, Mary Brownback, who was driving from Kansas to Iowa, where she was to meet her husband to campaign before their retreat this week. “Typical stuff.”
Hardly…
…They do things differently in Kansas.
Mrs. Brownback said she did not understand the sort of vacations most of the other candidates were taking. “A vacation is somewhere we can go and spend time together with kids or as a couple and be a family,” said the Kansas senator’s wife. “Not to go out and campaign. I wouldn’t call that a vacation.”
Greta-Loretta Exchange
The family fun that was the Greta-Loretta exchange in St. Louis. Also probably our last time to see Micah and Katie before they head for Beijing to attend the Harvard of Chinese law schools, Peking University.
Why does Hercules wrestle a monkey naked? We explored this, and many other fascinating questions, while goofing around at the St. Louis Art Museum.
Sweating it out at the St. Louis Cardinals game on Saturday. They were the closest seats most of us have ever had to the field — and they were in the sun during the entire game.
After today’s FOMC meeting I think we need some Police.
